Iran Turns to Coal Power Plants

Iran Turns to Coal Power Plants

Tehran Nov. 24 (Shana) - Iran plans to develop coal-fired power plants to generate electricity, an official at Iran Power Development Organization said.

“Many countries like China, Japan, US, Russia, Europeans and Africans depend on coal for their electricity, but in Iran, we have not focused on coal as a fossil fuel due to the abundance of natural gas,” Mostafa Ali Rabbani said.

He said Iran has decided to include coal into its energy mix as fossil fuels are experiencing a price hike and their exports are facilitated.

Rabbani said Iran started building its first coal-fired power plant in Tabas in the south of the country.

He said more than one billion tons of thermal coal is available in Tabas.
